¡VIVA DON QUIJOTE!

Genia Chef shares his fascination for Cervantes' Don Quixote, one of the most inspiring characters in world literature, with many other admirers.

But never before has an artist interpreted the adventures of the “Knight of the Sad Countenance” as radically as Genia Chef.

His inexhaustible willpower, his fanatical idealism, his boundless imagination, his courage, all presented in brilliant literary form, are a never-ending source of artistic inspiration.

On monumental canvases, Genia Chef unfolds a panorama that dissolves the boundaries between painting and graphic art. The artist impresses with his ability to lend the space of the pictorial composition a universal, even metaphysical vastness and to create a kind of topography of the soul.

Like no other artist before him, he combines the traditional heritage of fine painting with the expressive freedom of graphic art.

Genia Chef dilutes oil paint with liquid amber, just like the old masters, and confronts this with unexpected secret “mixtures” of wine and olive sauce, juices from the Spanish soil, as if he were serving a meal.

He weaves seemingly contradictory elements into a structured texture on canvas, a network of subtle color gradients covers the picture surface and is reminiscent of the dusty, endless roads of the barren landscape of La Mancha, which the artist brings to life with his nourishing alchemical liquids as if through anthropomorphic capillaries, similar to the human body and the brain, the origin of mental imagination.

Genia Chef also employs unusual methods in his depiction of scenes from the novel. He masterfully draws on canvas using bird feathers and ink, creating monumental compositions with dynamic, powerful strokes that are imbued with the experimental, courageous spirit of Miguel de Cervantes' work.

The longer the viewer engages with the imagery, the more surprises they can discover and the more they can give free rein to their own imagination.

The artist often leaves the charcoal underdrawing visible so that the dynamics in the development of the composition remain recognizable. Sketchy elements meet carefully designed figures and scenes.

The experimental design approach also forms the basis of Genia Chef's graphic work cycle.

He integrates the principle of chance into his concept when, during the coronavirus pandemic, he begins to use scraps of paper from medication packaging, which he prepares with tea or coffee, for his graphic series while in isolation at home. He integrates the stains and color gradients on this papier déchiré into his compositions with masterful skill. These drawings are the beginning of a series of works that Genia Chef calls “aesthetic recycling.”

Hundreds of drawings on Don Quixote have also been created as a result of this method.

In Genia Chef's work, a literary myth meets radical, visually powerful painting that captivates with its enormous physical presence.

Genia Chef invites us to experience the myth of Don Quixote anew—as a powerful visual experience.
